RMA Meeting: Friday, SEPTEMBER 11, 2026 10:00 AM;
SPEAKER INTRODUCTION BY: TBA
TOPIC: “Large language AI models!”
Large language AI models, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are widely used because they respond to text questions almost like a human. This talk explains how these models work in an easy-to-understand way, describes useful applications, and highlights their potential risks. The goal is to provide insight into thinking about how they work, harnessing them effectively for good, and avoiding the most serious problems. Common uses reviewed include obtaining personal guidance, looking up information, and both learning and writing. Problems discussed include making mistakes, spreading misinformation, exacerbating social isolation, and degrading critical thinking.
SPEAKER: Dr. Richard Lippmann
SPEAKER BIO:
Dr. Richard Lippmann has been a pioneer in the field of neural networks since the late 1980s. His influential paper, “An Introduction to Computing with Neural Nets,” encouraged scientists around the world to apply neural networks in areas such as speech, vision, and text recognition. Today, neural networks are at the core of the large language models and cutting-edge speech recognition technologies we use every day. Over his career, he has explored the use of neural networks for speech recognition, in medicine, and for cyber security. His most recent research focused on automating development of new machine-learning applications. Richard was an early program chair and contributor to the Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) conference, now one of the most influential gatherings in the field of AI.
He has delivered numerous talks globally, served as an IEEE distinguished lecturer, and is recognized as both an IEEE Fellow and an MIT Lincoln Laboratory Fellow. He has authored over 100 scientific papers and reports. Richard and his wife Carolyn live in Wayland and have four children and seven grandchildren.
Starts 9:45 for coffee/socializing at the First Baptist Church of Sudbury, 162 Landham Rd, Sudbury, MA
