TOPIC: “Fiber Optics: The First Decade Out of the Lab” 

John’s presentation will consist of three different parts. First, he will give a brief discussion of the history of optical communications. Next, he will give a brief tutorial on how optical fibers and connectors work. Finally, he will give a few antidotal stories about some of the more interesting projects he encountered during the decade when optical fiber went from the research lab to deployment in the real world.

SPEAKER BIO: 

John Esposito spent 40+ years working in various areas of high technology, retiring in 2019. In 2023, he joined the RMA. John has AB and MS degrees in physics from Rutgers University and an MBA from Northeastern University. The first ten years of his career were spent working in various aspects of the infant optical fiber industry. He dealt with optical connectors at Amphenol, optical cables at General Cable, and optical communications systems at GTE.
