Topic – “Unsung Heroes of Mission Control 1965-1992”

During the time of Apollo, the focus was on astronauts. It is time to shine light on the real heroes: the Flight Controllers and their support specialists, most of whom were recent college graduates. They had to write the book on how to get humans to the moon and back safely as it had never been done before.
Our Own Pat Mullen and his sister Florence will share information from Florence’s late husband, David Reed, who was the Flight Dynamics Officer (FIDO) responsible for planning and tracking and adjusting the trajectory. Dave was the Ground Pilot & Navigator for Apollo Flights 5, 9, 11, 12, 13, and 14. For his role in returning the Apollo 13 crew home safely, he was a Joint recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Florence will bring artifacts from the space program including items that were on the moon landings and Moon.

Florence: Born and raised in Arlington. Worked in marketing at Gould Graphic Systems and 25 years at Nashoba Brooks School of Concord. Development Office: Event Planning, Publications, Fund Raising and Management, Alumni Relations.

Pat: 47-year resident of Sudbury now lives in Westborough. Obtained BSBA and MBA in marketing from Boston College School of Management. Served as LT Artillery U.S. ARMY. First Infantry Div. as Battalion Communications Officer and Battery Cmdr. Honeywell EDP- Manufacturing, SDS, Scientific Data Systems- Sales, NE district manager. DEC, 20 years, marketing, and CIO.
